The Kindness Revolution

Last week, I was talking with the owner of Kind Notes about how a personal letter from just one person in support of your business can keep you going on days you're ready to throw in the towel! Ironically, yesterday I received one of those letters. I opened the bulky envelope to find 3 packages. In the first package was a ribbon with clasp and a decorative bead and key charm with a card that read, "You Have Just Been Tagged by Kindness" next to a photo of a beautiful young girl. On the back was a message about this young girl's FINAL wish: to celebrate life, hold each other up, and uplift those you don't even know. In the other two packages were necklaces that I understood were intended for me to give and uplift someone I don't know.
When I went to the website address printed on the card, I read the story of The Kindness Revolution and Amanda Edwards told by her mother, Rebecca Renaud. Amanda, known to her friends as Mandy, was a vibrant 17 year old girl who had a special understanding about the importance of helping those who others would choose to avoid. I immediately began to think of the similarities between Mandy and Rachel Scott of Rachel's Challenge. Another young girl who lived life with kindness and compassion. I wasn't surprised to find Rachel mentioned later as I went through the tabs on The Kindness Revolution. And just like Rachel, Mandy met her tragic death at the age of 17. Mandy's family (again...like Rachel's) was determined to remember and celebrate Mandy's life and not just mourn her death. And most importantly, continue her dream of helping others. This is a dual goal: (1) as easy as joining in the game of Kindness Tag or (2) as big as helping with the funds to bring a student from Africa to the US on a 4 year scholarship. That student will return to Africa and fulfill Mandy's dream of helping increase the number of teachers that are so desperately needed in Africa. Fulfilling the mission may be as simple as passing a Kindness Card supplied free by The Kindness Revolution, or contributing to the college fund by donating or purchasing an item from the Kindness Store.
Since I began this blog, I have become much more socially active in making the world kinder. Even if it is just joining movements and blogging, I'll do what I can to help. I plan on passing the necklaces on to others and spread the word of The Kindness Revolution.
Thank you, Rebecca, for finding me and including a link to String-Ring from your site promoting kindness.
I would rather have one rose and a kind word from a friend while I'm here
than a whole truck load when I'm gone. ~ The Kindness Revolution

May I send you a Gift?
Tina,
I am so pleased the gift made you smile!
I am working hard to do as Mandy instructed and wanted to extend the offer to those that take the time to read your website and these comments.
I would be happy to send something to anyone that takes the time to visit the website and fills out a contact form :)
Thank you
Oh Tina, thank you so much for these lovely words! You certainly started my week with a smile!
I should clarify that Mandy's last name was Edwards - As much as Parrish (my Husband) loved Mandy and treated her as his own and would certainly have been proud to share his name with her -
Her Father Todd Edwards was a wonderful father and I wouldn't want to offend him or anyone in his family by not being sure folks knew that :)
I hope everyone has a wonderful day! and Thank you Tina for being part of the Kindness Revolution!

Thanks Rececca. I just made that edit in my post.
Thanks for sharing this..
Hi Tina,
Glad you posted this experience, otherwise I would have never known about Mandy and the Kindness Revolution. It's wonderful to find people like Mandy's Mom who encourage kindness. It's very inspiring! I will definitely share this.
Linda
Takes one to know one ;)
Wonderful people who encourage kindness. Yes, you and Mandy's Mom and many others I've found since String-Ring began inspire me daily.
I wanted to UPDATE everyone!
Well - what a summer we have had - after Tina posted this wonderful story I actually ended up finding the Teach With Africa project and they helped me fulfill Mandy's dreams by setting up a Scholarship in Mandy's name to help them send Teachers to Africa! We sent our first "Mandy Representative" Katie this past summer and she did some amazing work!
We look forward to being able to help more teachers travel to Africa in Mandy's name :)

Congratulations!
Katie sounds like the perfect pick to complete Mandy's mission. I'm so happy you were able to make your daughter's dream happen. I think of you both often with my Tagged by Kindness necklace hanging in a special place in my office. I'll continue to share your story (working on a post now) and thank you for this wonderful news!
With a HUGE smile
