The Oneness Experiment

Comedians that use mean-spirited humor are not funny to me. One of the things I love about Ellen Degeneres is that she never uses another person as the butt of her jokes. So when I found out about Hollis Blume’s Oneness Experiment, I felt obliged to post her story. Hollis practices RAOK and is on a spiritual and scientific mission to meet Ellen DeGeneres in order to prove that we are all connected.
Hollis wrote to me:
Hi Tina,
I fill my day with Random Acts of Kindness because I love to see
people smile. And in this day and age, people are so surprised when
you do something nice for them! My husband and I find coins on the
street and put them in a jar. When the jar is full, I take it to the
bank and exchange it for paper money. I carry it with me, and when I
see a stranger on the street who looks like they may need a
pick-me-up, I hand them the money. It's usually only a few dollars,
but it really puts a smile on people's faces. Almost always, soon
after I have given the money away, we start finding more to refill our
jar.
I am also writing because I feel that putting RAOK's out there make
them come right back at you (like karma!) and I believe people are
generally kind and caring. For example: I have come up with an idea I call "The Oneness Experiment".
THE ONENESS EXPERIMENT
“Every person is a new door to a different world.” --From the movie “Six Degrees of Separation”
I find life fascinating and full of joy, in large part due to the people who have come in and out of my life. But last June when my father died, I sometimes found it hard to look on the bright side. His passing left me with such a deep sadness.
Oddly enough, on days when I didn’t feel like smiling, I could watch “The Ellen Degeneres Show” and somehow connect again to the joy inside of me. It didn’t matter who her guests were or what the show was about; watching Ellen brought love and gratitude back into my life.
This got me thinking about “Six Degrees of Separation,” and how we’re all connected to each other. I believe love and gratitude are what binds us, even more so than coincidence and chance. To demonstrate my belief in our connectedness, I started “The Oneness Experiment.”
The intention of the experiment is to find someone, who knows someone, who knows someone, etc., who can introduce me to Ellen in person. I want to meet her to let her know how she lifted my spirits during a difficult time. And when I do meet her, I want to bring the string of people involved in connecting us.
I know this experiment is going to work because I believe any actions motivated by love and gratitude have the power to succeed. “The Oneness Experiment” will demonstrate this by showing we are all connected—that the spaces between Ellen in California and me in Lake Bluff are filled with people who are caring and giving and who want to help each other. How much fun to put this idea out there and see the magic that happens!
Why am I doin this? So I can examine my life in many different ways and ask myself, "How did I uplift myself and others? Did I wake up each day with love and appreciation? Did I bring the love of the Universe into everything I did and to everyone I met? And did I have FUN doing it?”
Where are you on the Ellen spectrum? Can you help me with “The Oneness Experiment”? If so, email me at hollis@watermewell.com or join at “The Oneness Experiment” blog
Come join in being a new door to a different world.

The String of People
Oh how I would love to be in that string of people that makes the connection possible.
You've inspired me to do my own little experiment. A "Pass Kindness On" game. I'm going to give the next person I meet who does something kind a String-Ring to wear for a week. Then I'll ask that they polish it up with the cloth, change the string, and "Pass it On" to a stranger they meet who does something kind.
Thanks for the inspiration Hollis!
