Stealing Kindness

What a great title for a film about a mugging victim using what most of us would consider a terrifying confrontation, as an opportunity to help a troubled teen. I heard about this short film project currently being shown at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival and my attention was caught. The creative mind behind this work is Roy Hathon, a young film director/producer hoping to create a kinder climate through motion picture.
This short film, Stealing Kindness, is a true story about one man's attempt to help an angry teen in spite of the fact that the young man intends to harm him. Can you just imagine a world where fear and contempt is replaced with compassion and understanding? The hero in the real story, Julio Diaz, even gets the perpetrator to hand over his weapon, a knife, in the end. You can read about the actual event that inspired the movie here. This NPR clip motivated Roy to write the Stealing Kindness screenplay.
Good luck in the Vimeo Festival + Awards, Roy!
